How to Check Twitch Chat Logs?

Twitch is the leading streaming platform and is being used by 26+ million people every day that include both viewers and creators. It has a niche audience of online gamers. Without any second thought, it is the mostpopular platform among gaming enthusiasts and gamers, but that doesn’t mean that it has nothing to offer to other content creators. You’ll find videos on tuts, DIY, cooking, creative arts, lifestyle and many more.

This platform provides users with a robust way of building vibrant communities for their fans and viewers, via Twitch Chat. The chat is displayed in the form of a horizontal bar that is next to the stream's window so users can engage with one another while simultaneously watching the stream. It is a key part of the Twitch experience, allowing streamers to interact with their viewers in ways entirely unique to the platform. It has value beyond the simple conversation. These chats contain a ton of insightful information about your audience feedback and behaviour that help creators in many ways. However, if you’re a Twitch streamer, it becomes crucial to ensure that your chat isn’t being polluted with inappropriate or offensive comments, hate speech or abusive remarks. Though most of the viewers are friendly & responsible and conduct positive interactions with their streamers yet there are always a few bad elements that can ruin the experience for everyone else. Hence, analyzing the twitch log will let you access this information and take necessary actions against them and ensure a positive chat experience for all your viewers.

In this article, we will tell you how you can check Twitch Chat Logs using different techniques.

How to check your Chat Logs as a Streamer?

1- By Using The Search Command

This method is useful if you are looking for a specific account. If you know the Twitch username of the person, this is the simple method that works well.

All you require is to type this command /client [username] in your channel’s chatbox and you can access the useful data about any specific user such as:

•    How many messages have the user left on your channel?

•    What type of comments has the user left on your channel?

•    Any comments left by your mods about that particular user.

This method also makes it easier to check how long the person has been a part of your community, when the account was created or how many times he has been banned. It’s helpful for identifying if a user creates a new account to get around earlier bans.

2- By Viewing Your VOD

One of the easiest and effective methods to view comments or chats is to play or skim through VODs ( Video On Demand), when you activate the VOD chat recording tool, it will record everything, including comments dropped during a stream. With this method, you can also view all chat logs including those messages that were retracted along with the comments removed by moderators. This way, you can get access to the removed comments in Twitch and double-check if the person needs to be banned or not.

The only drawback of this method is that you will have to go through the entire stream to get a playback of your chat that occurred during the stream. It can be a little bit time-consuming.

3- Using A Third-Party Program:

If the above two methods are not enough to serve your purposes, you can also take the help of third-party tools to monitor your chats. These third-party programs not only let you see deleted and removed chats but also let you store chat logs so that you can review them whenever required.

One of the most widely used tools for this purpose is Chatty. Chatty is an open-source java-based chat software that comes with a ton of features to help streamers and moderators in various ways. This program has a pretty clean user interface. Unfortunately, the user interface seems inspired by IRC clients, and therefore, there is a slight learning curve that you have to go through. However, once you get used to it, it can be the best choice for you.  Chatty also retains information such as emotes and badges to fill holes in your data. It stores your chat logs for a few weeks, after which they are discarded. It doesn’t keep them by default; you have to configure it too.

4- Using Chat Moderator View

If you are a moderator of a channel, you will have access to the chat logs of every individual viewer on your channel. For that, you just need to enable the Mod view. To enter the Mod-view, follow the simple steps given below:

Step 1: Open your twitch account and go to the stream of which you want to check the chat log.

Step-2: Click the sword icon on the lower-right part of your screen to enable the “Mod-view”.

Step 3: Click on any particular user’s name to view their entire chat history on your channel.

With this feature, you can also check how many times the person has been banned from the channel or timed out. Moreover, you will also be able to view any comments left by the moderator, check the bans, reports, and timeout of the users.
